Black History Model Edition Donyale Luna "The su in Super Model"
This woman, this Goddess like creature is no other than Donyale Luna. Now she is crowned as the first black supermodel and I can see why. her Bold features, her elongated neck and those legs. She is what so many models today dream of. Black or white if they don't take a page from her scrap book they are crazy. Her story is a bit tragic, but she was able to take the supermodel plateau to a whole new level. While she credits being more than on ethnicity, she was born and raised in Detroit as Peggy Ann Freeman later changing her name to Donyale Luna. Just looking at her photos I can imagine the energy around her, and I can see she loved the camera as it so loved her. From the history books stand point she was a bit of a firecracker who was overindulgent in the drugs department, and it lead to her early departure from this world. I miss her and I never knew her. If only she knew how many little girls of all races were inspired by her beauty. Long live her spirit and accomplishments that made it if only a little bit easier for women of color to be seen as the beauties we are. Peggy Ann Freeman A.K.A Donyale Luna January 1,1945 to May 17,1979

Black History Model Edition" The Black Beauty Naomi Sims"
I can't imagine why we black women still have skin issues. Well we do. Even me being a reddish brown skinned girl(my Indian roots) have experienced major lows because I was confused about what beauty was. Growing up I saw these beautiful black images on t.v and in film but I also noticed that the hero always ended up with the light skinned girl or the white women. That can really confuse a child. Even to this day studies are done to see where children's natural attractions lie, but it is just that a lie. How can you deny a woman with the smoothest and creamiest chocolate skin a gorgeous smile and a stride to match. As you can see I am talking about Lady Naomi Sims
Naomi Sims was born in 1948 in Oxford Mississippi. She went from a dreaming teen to teen supermodel. Her biggest break came after signing with another former model's modeling agency(Wilhelmina Cooper) and was booked for
an AT&T commercial that took her career to the next level. She said the great thing about it was when people saw the commercial they wanted to know who she was and use her. Interesting note she was offered the role in "'Cleopatra Jones" but turned it down because she was not happy with the depiction of blacks in the film. Who knew? Aside from her masterful career in modeling she was a muse; photographed by Andy Warhol, and she started a multi-million dollar empire in hair/ beauty and cosmetics for black women. She was all beauty and all brains. She authored several books, showing women how to be there best and never give up on your dreams. Naomi along with the rest of the women I have brought you are apart of an elite group of women all women should take inspiration from. Women who faced adversity and won. Women who have pulled up their sleeves to fight for their dreams, and women who at the end of the day are grateful for everything they were able to accomplish. I know She is looking down at Joan Smalls, Liya Kebede, and Chanel Iman and can be proud that she was a pioneer of the black model.

Black History Model Edition "Vanessa Williams"
If you don't know this woman who the hell are you???
Lady Vanessa Williams has and is the first in a long line of triple treats of the eighties and nineties. She sang she acted and most of all she got her groove on. Among the twenty or so women that would turn me into a Stan fan if I saw them in person she is one of them. Her controversial beginning in showbiz is now the standard in how to get famous; even though that was not the case with her. The betrayal that ensued after her being crowned the first African American Miss America was heart breaking. In the end she was able to hold her head high and bounce back. Bounce back she did with a bountiful career in film and music. I still remember those lace leotards and leather jacket in the "Right Stuff" video. We all would stand around and try to do all the dances she did. I adore her and think sh is a great influence on young women anywhere. When "Ugly Betty" started not only was I happy that the star was not a societal beauty, but Vanessa Williams was in it a!! I was going to be damned if I missed one episode. All the fashion was breath taking and Vanessa wore it all to a "T". She is legendary already and I am sure she has much more to do .
